The 14 days Uganda Traditional Tour gives you the opportunity of visiting community-based projects and learn about the fascinating culture of the tribes in Uganda. A true immersion in Ugandan culture! The Traditional Uganda Experience Tour takes you through the Buganda, Bagishu, Karamojong, Banyankole, Batooro, Bahima, and Batwa Communities.  Learn about the way of life of these communities and get immersed in their traditional customs while interacting with the local people.

Tour Itinerary of the 14 days Uganda Traditional Experience

Day 1: Arrival in Entebbe

Upon arrival at Entebbe airport, you will be picked up by a company representative and transferred to Speke Resort Munyonyo for relaxation and an overnight stay.

Day 2: Entanda Cultural Center and Buganda Royal Trail

Breakfast and then head to Entanda Cultural Center, a community-based program that offers an authentic cultural experience of Buganda in the central region of Uganda. You will get to participate in activities like practical classes of cooking food in the traditional way, demonstration of traditional wear,  traditional hunting, the ancient courtship musical instrument, tasting of fresh honey, traditional wine processing, bicycle rides in the plantations, bark clothing making, a walk in the forest, games such as netball, football, board games, and skipping of ropes, educative and informative talks.   

After lunch, you will head back to Naggalabi Coronation Site. This is a unique journey through the kingdom of Buganda’s rich heritage. Get a chance to learn about the history of Buganda Kings( Kabaka), as well as to experience an authentic, traditional culture with dance, music, craft making, and storytelling.  Naggalabi Coronation site comprises different historical houses that are important in the coronation of the Buganda kings.

The Buganda house, where the prince spends nine days after being crowned, Every crowned king spends nine days in this house. The kabaka uses the nine days to select his cabinet and strategize on how to run the affairs of the kingdom.

Mbonelede Tree

This tree is believed to be one of the oldest trees in the country. It is said that during his reign, Kabaka Kintu used it as his court. It is large, with long branches bending to the ground from the top in an umbrella-like shape. During court sessions, people pleaded for mercy saying ‘“Mbonelede,” meaning “I have learnt a lesson,” thus giving the tree its name.  Depending on the time, you might experience storytelling, traditional music, dance, and drama performance. 

If time allows, you will head to Kasubi Tombs where Buganda’s former four kings were buried.  Later head back to the hotel for relaxation. Accommodation and Meals at Speke Resort Munyonyo.

Day 3: Kampala – Sipi falls – Coffee project 

After breakfast, head out towards Tororo, with a stopover to observe the Tororo Rock, a prominent rock that rises 300 meters above the surrounding plains. We proceed to Mbale, a charming town at the foot of Mount Elgon. This area is full of rich heritage and fascinating culture. We will have a lunch stop at Mbale and with beautiful viewpoints on our way we will reach Sipi Village, nestled between mountains and waterfalls.  After lunch, you will have a village coffee tour learning how coffee is processed from the seed to the cup. If time allows, take on the hike for scenic views of the 3 waterfalls. Accommodation and Meals at Sipi River Lodge 

Day 4: To Kidepo National Park 

Today you will set off for Kidepo Valley National Park passing through Kotido and Kaabong districts. Kidepo is in the northeastern corner of Uganda and has a true calling to the stunning wilderness. As you proceed you will pass through the mountainous landscape as you drive through the Kotido region to reach Africa’s premier wilderness park with a picnic lunch en route. Accommodation and meals at Kidepo Savannah Lodge. 

Day 5: Mount Morungule – IK community immersion 

Breakfast and then head out for a community visit to the Ik people on the top of Morungole Mountain. Get immersed in the cultural experience as the people share their cultural activities. Here you will spend a wonderful day with the Karamojong people and have an insight into their way of life and beliefs, traditions and norms, how bride price is determined in their culture, and child naming ceremonies. This is an opportunity to participate in the traditional dances and songs of the indigenous local people as well. Accommodation and Meals at Kidepo Savannah Lodge.

Day 6: Kidepo to Boomu Women’s Group – Village walk

After breakfast set off towards the edge of Murchison Falls Park arriving in time for lunch. Thereafter you will head to the Boomu Women’s Group. Boomu means together and this describes the purpose of the group, working together for our mutual benefit and the benefit of our communities.  This scenic walk takes you through the village, learning about everyday rural life, explaining the community challenges, learning about the crops that are grown in Kigaragara, and a visit to the village blacksmith. Get to buy some of the local crafts from the women’s group like baskets and woven blankets. Accommodation and meals at Budongo Forest Eco Lodge. 

Day 7: To Fort Portal 

Early breakfast and then transfer to Fort Portal through the verdant countryside as you pass traditional homesteads and farms. Fort Portal rests in the shadow of the fabled Mountains of the Moon and is famous for its large tea plantations. It has some of the most beautiful sceneries and unique environment nature has to offer with numerous crater lakes, hills, mountains, endemic fauna, and flora, and one of the most beautiful, serene, and hospitable people you can find. Accommodation and Meals at Tinka’s Homestead. 

Day 8: Bigodi village walk and Traditional Meal Tasting. 

After breakfast, embark on a cultural village walk in Bigodi village with the Batooro tribe. The walk will take up to 3 to 4 hours depending on the pace of the group. The highlights include a visit to a traditional healer with knowledge about spirits, herbs, plants, and local medicines. Next, you will visit the homes of elderly people who tell interesting stories about birth, marriage, ceremonies, clans, and their traditional way of life. Get a glimpse into the Ugandan school system with a stopover at a school, visit a local church, and Bigodi’s trading center, a hub of rural life and activity.  Later you will get immersed in the authentic tradition of food preparation.  You will enjoy fresh, organic food underneath a thatched roof, with melodies from bird calls. Learn how your meals are prepared and more traditions about the Batooro.  Accommodation and Meals at Tinka’s Homestead. 

Day 9: Fort portal to Nshenyi Village 

After breakfast, transfer to Nshenyi through the beautiful countryside, displaying rich vegetation, landscaped, mountain backdrops, and beautiful groups of people along the highway. Accommodation and Meals at Nshenyi Village Farm

Day 10:  Milking Cows, Nature Walk, and Traditional Music Performance

The morning starts early as you will go to the field to milk the long-horned Ankole cows. Return to the farm for breakfast, before we take a short walk to the village of a Bahima tribe and thereafter head for the 45-minute walk to the watering area of the cattle.  In the afternoon you may go for a nature walk to the River Kagera, a natural border with Tanzania. A non-professional local group will entertain you in the evening with traditional dancing and singing. Accommodation and Meals at Nshenyi Village.

Day 11: Nshenyi Village – Bwindi National Park 

After breakfast, head to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park arriving in time for late lunch and relaxation. Accommodation and Meals at Mwebesa House 

Day 12: Batwa Experience  and Ride 4 a Woman 

After breakfast, you will enjoy an incredible day hike in the rain forest with Batwa guides, see how the Batwa lived and hunted, learn about medicinal plants, and watch for animals and birds. You will hear ancient legends and traditional songs, watch energetic dances, and join in on a mock hunting demonstration. You can even test your skill with a Batwa bow and arrow. Visit one of the traditional homesteads to learn more about their way of life. Later, returned to the lodge for relaxation and lunch. After lunch, visit Ride 4 a Woman, a locally founded women’s empowerment initiative, that offers you a truly authentic East African cultural experience. Join the women and learn to weave baskets, cook local dishes and watch the women of the community showcase their culture through traditional dance — or even better, you can learn to dance with them. Accommodation and meals at Mwebesa House. 

Day 13: Bwindi Forest –  Igongo Cultural Center 

Early breakfast and head to Igongo Cultural Museum for a glimpse into the culture and history of the Ankole people.  Check out the Nkwazi crafts shop, the eclipse monument, the cultural village (Itaramiro), and the Mpororo Courts.  Accommodation and meals at Igongo Cultural Center and Country Hotel. 

Day 14: Igongo Cultural Center  – Entebbe Airport for departure

Breakfast and then head back to Entebbe depending on your flight back to you, you will be dropped off for your onward flight back home at the end of the  14 days Uganda Traditional Experience.
