Kidepo Valley National Park has been nominated for the World Travel Awards amongst Africa’s National Leading Park. I totally agree, it’s Uganda’s best kept not now secret! It’s got some of the most stunning scenery, get immersed in the rolling savannah landscapes, rugged mountain scenery, thrilling game viewing and bird watching.
Kidepo Valley National Park is situated in North Eastern Uganda and is one of Uganda’s finest wildlife preserve covering 1442 sq kms. With its vast savannahs extending towards mountain ranges in three countries, Uganda, Kenya and South Sudan, rugged mountain scenery and a wilderness thrill, it is one of the best parks in Uganda offering stunning scenery.
A visit to Kidepo National Park is like no other! First if you are on the road, it can seem like forever to get to the Park or you are on a treasure hunt! It’s a 12 hours’ drive from Kampala, however, you can take a break in Gulu, Kitgum or take a flight to the park. The Journey will be worthwhile when you do get to the park.
You get to interact with the local community – The IK and Karamojong Communities will leave you with a feel-good vibe about life. Join in the dancing and jump as high as you can, get that smile on your face if your neighbor outjumps you!
The Narus Valley is the Park’s Prime Game Viewing Area, get your cameras ready during your wildlife drives. Lions can be spotted on the rocky outcrops, look out for the Ostriches close to the Kanangorok Hotsprings. For the Birders’, close to 500 bird species can be found in the park.
Furthermore, Kidepo Valley National Park is famed for harboring a number of animals found nowhere else in Uganda including the Cheetahs, Bat eared foxes, Aardwolves, Greater and Lesser Kudus, Black -backed Jackals and Klipspringers.
Kidepo Valley National Park can be visited all year round although conditions are more difficult during the rainy season (Jan to May, and Oct to Dec). If you must visit the park, it’s advisable to use 4×4 vehicles.
Within the Park, accommodations are Apoka Rest Camp (Budget option though some bandas/ cottages are en-suite and Apoka Safari Lodge (Luxury option). There is eye catching game around these accommodations from time to time.
