DAY 1: ARRIVAL AT ENTEBBE INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT
Upon your arrival in Entebbe, you will be picked up by a Uganda Primates & Wildlife Safari representative transferred to your hotel. Overnight at Karibu Guest House B
DAY 2: ENTEBBE – LAKE MBURO NATIONAL PARK (6 HRS DRIVE)
After breakfast you will head southwest to Lake Mburo National Park. On your Uganda Primates & Wildlife Safari journey, you’ll will pass the Ugandan Equator where you can take pictures and shop for a souvenir. As we enter the park and head towards the accommodation it is likely you will see some wildlife, like impalas, topis, warthogs, zebras and buffaloes. After lunch you will go a boat trip on Lake Mburo and do a short game drive. Dinner and overnight at Rwakobo Rock (B, L, D)
DAY 3: LAKE MBURO – BWINDI NATIONAL PARK. (4 HRS DRIVE)
Early start of the day as we will go for a bush walk guided by a ranger for a 2-hour hike. Lake Mburo National Park is renowned for its rich birdlife and beautiful lakes. Enjoy a nature walk searching for zebra, warthog, buffalo, impala and, look out for the largest of Africa’s Antelope the beautiful Eland. The Uganda Primates & Wildlife Safari bush breakfast will be arranged for you.
Thereafter you will then depart Lake Mburo National and transfer to Bwindi National Park with lunch en route. This is a truly scenic drive, especially as you get closer to the Forest.
Dinner and Overnight at Ichumbi Gorilla Lodge. (B, L, D)
Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park, home of the rare but critically endangered Mountain Gorillas (gorilla beringei beringei), lies on the edge of the albertine Rift Valley in south-western Uganda, with a wide altitude range between 1,160m and 2,600m. The forest itself, dating back to the ice ages, is one of Uganda’s oldest and ecologically most diverse with almost 400 species of plants, 350 species of birds including 23 Albertine Rift endemics as well as 120 mammals species including lots of smaller mammals like rodents and bats but also the Gorillas, Baboons, Chimpanzees, Elephants and Antelopes.
DAY 4: GORILLA TREKKING IN BWINDI
Arise early today and prepare for the highlight of your Uganda Primates & Wildlife Safari, an unforgettable encounter with the gentle giants of Bwindi! Following breakfast, transfer to the national park offices where you will be allocated a gorilla family in groups of 8 as well as a gorilla tracking guide.
After a pre-tracking briefing by your guide touching on the gorillas generally, your assigned gorilla family as well as appropriate safety precautions, you drive to the trailhead for the start of a thrilling adventure – participants can expect to walk long distances in steep and sometimes muddy conditions with rain overhead, which can be tough and require a degree of fitness, however the thrill of coming face to face with a giant Mountain Gorilla silverback far more than makes up for the effort in their quest. Granted the time taken can be quite unpredictable taking anything from 2 to 8 hrs or longer.
You will have packed lunch from the lodge for this hike. Upon sighting the gorillas, you spend the allowed one hour with them as they go about their daily life; feeding, moving, playing, raising their young and sometimes wrestling by the juveniles – it is a totally unique and unforgettable experience! Afterwards, you hike back to base from where you will be transferred back to the lodge for a well deserved shower, some time to relax and a great dinner. DAY 5: DRIVE TO QUEEN ELIZABETH NATIONAL PARK (7HRS DRIVE)
Breakfast at 8:00am and then transfer to Queen Elizabeth National Park arriving in time for lunch. Queen Elizabeth National Park (QENP) together with Kyambura and Kigezi Wildlife Reserves form one of the most diverse ecosystems in Africa. The melting glacier waters of the Rwenzori Mountains create a vast wetland system comprising of two main lakes, George and Edward, as well as the connecting Kazinga Channel that is a birders paradise, thousands of hippos populate these lakeshore lines. There is an open savannah dotted with Acacia and Euphorbia trees provide habitat for elephants, lions, leopards, Uganda kobs and big herds of buffaloes. Among the many animals frequently seen are giant forest hog, waterbucks, topi, hyenas and crocodiles. Have lunch and relaxation in the evening. Dinner and Overnight at Marafiki Safari Lodge (B, L, D)
Queen Elizabeth National Park, at 1,978 km2 Uganda’s second largest park, boasts one of the highest biodiversity ratings of any game park or reserve in the world with over 100 mammal species including Lions, Elephants, Chimpanzees and an astounding 606 bird species in her diverse eco-systems from open savannah grasslands to rain forest, making it a world premier safari destination in Africa. The Kazinga Channel, a natural canal that joins Lake Edward and Lake George is one of the parks domineering features and a boat on a cruise on her calm waters brings you abundant birdlife as well the elephants, buffaloes and hundreds of hippos that graze and cool off on its shores. At the adjacent Kyambura Gorge, you can hike the forest valleys and ridges in search of the habituated chimpanzees, man’s genetically closest wild animal relative, for an unforgettable encounter.
DAY 6: QUEEN ELIZABETH NATIONAL PARK
After breakfast, head for the Lion Experiential Project, a research project that allows visitors to participate in monitoring the prides in the park, using locator devices and learn habituation calls, as well as monitoring weather, surroundings and behaviour. The Lion Project involves the clients and the researchers heading as early as 6:30am with a safari vehicle equipped with radio-collar-receiving equipment to keep track of the lions. Head back to the Uganda Primates & Wildlife Safari lodge for relaxation.
After lunch at your Lodge, you will take on a 3-hour scenic boat cruise at 14:00hrs along the Kazinga Channel, a natural and pre-historic canal that joins Lakes Edward and George. It is 33 kilometres long stretching from 12-14 kms and 2- 3 kms at its widest points, guests are guaranteed excellent wildlife sightings including, multitudes of hippopotamus, Nile crocodiles, wallowing buffaloes on its reedy banks, elephants, multitudes of birds including many endemics as well as hundreds of other plains game that come to it for water all day long. Thereafter head back to the lodge for relaxation. Dinner and Overnight at Marafiki Safari Lodge (B, L, D)
DAY 7: TO KIBALE FOREST PARK & CHIMP TRACKING 4HRS DRIVE
Set off from Queen Elizabeth National Park and head to Kibale Forest arriving in time for lunch at the lodge and thereafter at 13:00hrs head to the briefing session at the park headquarters which is a 10 minutes’ stroll from the lodge.
Today the forest opens its doors for a sensational chimp tracking. Kibale Forest is reputable for having the greatest variety and highest concentration of primates in East Africa. Enjoy a Uganda Primates & Wildlife Safari guided nature walk in the tropical rainforest in search of the wild chimpanzee, red-tailed monkey, black-and-white colobus monkey and many others.
You will spend an unforgettable hour with the chimpanzees watching them as they eat, groom, play, taking care of their young, and go through their daily routine in their natural habitat. Afterwards you will trek back to the Lodge for a well-deserved shower as you relax and wait for dinner.
Dinner and Overnight at Turaco TreeTops (B, L, D)
Kibale National Park is an extensive Biodiversity national park in South Uganda with about 795 km2 of forest cover with patches of grassland and swamps. The tropical forest is connected to Queen Elizabeth National Park through an amazing 180km long wildlife corridor from Ishasha in the south of Queen Elizabeth to Sebitoli in the North of Kibale Forest. With 351 recorded tree species, Kibale National Forest has one of the greatest variety and concentration of primates in Africa including our famous cousin, the Chimpanzee, the red colobus, vervet, L’Hoest’s, blac-and- white colobus and the olive baboon. Not forgetting the array of unique birds, forest elephants (smaller and hairier than the more familiar savannah elephant) and much more. Kibale is also one of Africa’s foremost research sites, for chimpanzees and other primates, but also for the ecosystem in general.
DAY 8: DRIVE BACK TO ENTEBBE (7 HRS) – DEPARTURE
After the delicius Uganda Primates & Wildlife Safari breakfast, you bid farewell to Kibale National Park with your packed lunch and head back to Entebbe. You will be transferred to the airport to connect to your late evening international flight. (B,L)
